What it is

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune-related condition that can cause round or patchy hair loss on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. Some episodes settle; others need longer follow-up.

It is not the same as androgenetic (pattern) hair loss. A skin specialist examines the scalp to help tell them apart.
